Budget Worksheet

All students must complete a Budget Worksheet for their individual program as part of their Rice Study Abroad application. This worksheet will indicate both to our office and to the Office of Financial Aid your estimated cost of attendance at the institution abroad.

Cost of attendance is calculated based on tuition & fees, room & board, travel, personal expenses, and books & supplies. Keep in mind that living costs abroad may be more or less expensive than those at Rice, so cost will vary based on type of academic program, destination, length of program and other factors.

Please fill out the Budget Worksheet to the best of your knowledge and submit it by the application deadline as part of your Rice Study Abroad application. Your study abroad advisor can assist you if you have questions while filling out the worksheet.

Rice Study Abroad Billing

The Rice Office of Study Abroad does not charge an online application fee.

Provider and Direct Enroll Programs

Rice students studying on direct enrollment or third-party provider programs will pay the host university/program provider directly for tuition and all program fees, and will not pay tuition or room & board to Rice. Please consult the specific program for fees and billing details.

Students who fall into this category will also be charged a Student Activities Fee (semester & academic year students only) and a Rice Enrollment Continuance Fee. These fees will be charged by the Bursar’s Office—click here to review the dollar amount for each (“Tuition Paid at Sponsor”).

Lastly, students should be aware of any additional payments ahead of the program start date such as a deposit, roundtrip airfare, and visa fees if applicable. The deposit just mentioned is not an additional cost, rather the first program payment installation (typically non-refundable) to confirm commitment. These expenses are all the student’s responsibility to take care of.

Exchange Programs

Rice students studying via an exchange program at a partner institution will pay Rice tuition just as they would if they were studying on campus. Visit this page of the Bursar’s Office website to review Rice tuition costs (you must click the “Tuition Paid at Rice” tab).

All other fees will be paid directly to the host institution. Exchanges are not available for the summer.

Any above mentioned Rice fees or tuition will be billed to the student's account by the Bursar’s Office. For inquiries regarding student accounts, please contact the Bursar's Office (bursar@rice.edu).
